Dr. Allen Bishop, Chair of Pacficia Graduate Institute's Clinical Program, will be performing at the 5th Annual Santa Barbara Beethovenfest on December 7th and 8th, 2007. The December 7th concert is a Benefit for the Santa Barbara Music Club. Allen will be accompanying world renowned cellist Christine Walevska in Beethoven's early G minor Sonata.

Leigh Melander: Mythological Studies 2005.

Leigh Melander Ph.D.,(2005 graduate from Mythological Studies)invites you to joinThe Imaginal Institute for a Free Online Conversation on the Work and Contexts of James Hillman.

In celebration of the Special Event for James Hillman, an extraordinary gathering coming next June in Pittsburgh and the accompanying book, Archetypal Psychologies: Reflections in Honor of James Hillman, edited by Stanton Marlan and published by Spring Journal Books, the Imaginal Institute is proud to host a free, seven-week, online conversation beginning February 1, 2008, exploring some of his ideas and those of scholars his work has touched.

Several eminent scholars who have contributed to the upcoming book, including Edward Casey, David Miller, Glen Slater, and Mary Watkins, as well as Hillman’s official biographer, Dick Russell, will join us, along with members of the myth and archetypal psychology community from around the world. Imaginal Institute Founding Fomenter Leigh Melander (Myth Studies ’05) and Fellow Jacob I. Wright (Myth Studies ’06) will host the conversation.

Maura Conlon-McIvor Ph.D., (2004 graduate from Depth Psychology) is the L.A. Annual Joseph Campbell Program at Esalen. Joseph Campbell gave a program at Esalen in March almost every year for almost 20 years. After his death in 1987, the Joseph Campbell Foundation continued the tradition by arranging for people who had worked with Campbell to hold workshops.

This year, Chungliang Al Huang will present a workshop with Robert Walter, the director of the Joseph Campbell Foundation , titled "That was Zen, this is Tao: Eastern Philosophy and the Hero's Journey" from March 23-25, to be followed by the workshop "At Play in the Fields of the Lord: A Mythological Toolkit (14th Edition, Revised)" on March 25-30.

Campbell' Writings on James Joyce. Joseph Campbell was hired at Sarah Lawrence College in 1934 to be a Professor of Literature, and by 1940 he was teaching his students about the writings of the controversial avant-garde writer James Joyce. Many critics thought that the multi-layered book Finnegans Wake was a fraud, and Campbell's first published book in 1944 was "A Skelton Key to Finnegans Wake," which is now available again in a new edition published in cooperation with the Joseph Campbell Foundation .

Also available is Mythic Worlds, Modern Words: On the Art of James Joyce , edited from lectures and scholarly essays that Campbell produced throughout his career.

APPIC Directory Online. The APPIC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the APPIC Directory Online (DoL) has now been updated for the 2009-2010 training year.

To access the DoL, go to www.appic.org and click on "Access the Directory Online" in the right-side menu. Questions about the DoL may be sent to the Chair of the Directory Committee, Dr. Phi Loan Le (Le_PhiLoan@sac.edu) or to Dr. Teri Simoneau (teri.simoneau@usoncology.com), APPIC Board Member.

We would also like to apologize to those of you who had difficulty accessing the Directory in recent weeks. Our server experienced a series of virus attacks, leading to very significant technical problems and requiring us to take the Directory offline for substantial periods. We hope that these issues are now behind us.

SEARCH TIPS:

1. You may select multiple states, provinces, and/or metro areas in a single search. To do so, hold down the "Control" key (or the "Command" key if using a Mac) while clicking on the locations that you wish to to search.

2. You may save the results of any search by "Bookmarking" (or otherwise saving) the URL when displaying the search results. To retrieve these saved results, simply copy the saved URL back into your browser.

3. If you experience a display error (such as words or fields that overlap on your screen), this may be an indication that your browser or computer is short on memory. Try refreshing your screen, or closing out any other programs that are running and restart your browser.

APPIC PRINTED DIRECTORY: Beginning this year, APPIC will no longer issue a printed copy of the Directory. This decision was made after several years of surveying APPIC members and internship applicants, with many students telling us that they relied primarily on the online version of the Directory to obtain the most up-to-date information. An archival copy of the Directory will be available for download (as a ".pdf" file) from the APPIC web site later this summer.

APPIC DIRECTORY ONLINE FEE: ALL students who participate in the APPIC Match will be required to pay a fee for the DoL. This fee will be $20 for students from doctoral programs that are APPIC Subscribers or members of CCPPP (Canadian Council of Professional Psychology Programs) and $50 for students from non-APPIC Subscriber programs. This fee will be collected at the time of Match registration in the Fall; however, students do not need to wait to use the DoL as it is available for searching now. No access codes or passwords are required to search the DoL.

Based on the numbers from last year's Match, approximately 95% of registered internship applicants were from doctoral programs that were APPIC subscribers or CCPPP members. Thus, the vast majority of applicants will qualify for the reduced $20 DoL fee.

There is no charge for postdoctoral applicants to use the APPIC Directory Online.

Prozac works only on severely depressed?. According to a recent UK Guardian report, Prozac, used by 40m people does not work. Here's an excerpt (click on the link above for full article): The study examined all available data on the drugs, including results from clinical trials that the manufacturers chose not to publish at the time. The trials compared the effect on patients taking the drugs with those given a placebo or sugar pill. When all the data was pulled together, it appeared that patients had improved - but those on placebo improved just as much as those on the drugs. The only exception is in the most severely depressed patients, according to the authors - Prof Irving Kirsch from the department of psychology at Hull University and colleagues in the US and Canada. But that is probably because the placebo stopped working so well, they say, rather than the drugs having worked better.
