APPIC Directory Online

The APPIC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the APPIC
Directory Online (DoL) has now been updated for the 2009-2010
training year.

To access the DoL, go to www.appic.org and click on "Access the
Directory Online" in the right-side menu. Questions about the DoL
may be sent to the Chair of the Directory Committee, Dr. Phi Loan Le
(Le_PhiLoan@sac.edu) or to Dr. Teri Simoneau
(teri.simoneau@usoncology.com), APPIC Board Member.

We would also like to apologize to those of you who had difficulty
accessing the Directory in recent weeks. Our server experienced a
series of virus attacks, leading to very significant technical
problems and requiring us to take the Directory offline for
substantial periods. We hope that these issues are now behind us.

SEARCH TIPS:

    1. You may select multiple states, provinces, and/or metro areas in a
single search. To do so, hold down the "Control" key (or the
"Command" key if using a Mac) while clicking on the locations that
        you wish to to search.

    2. You may save the results of any search by "Bookmarking" (or
otherwise saving) the URL when displaying the search results. To
retrieve these saved results, simply copy the saved URL back into
        your browser.

    3. If you experience a display error (such as words or fields that
overlap on your screen), this may be an indication that your browser
or computer is short on memory. Try refreshing your screen, or closing
out any other programs that are running and restart your browser.

APPIC PRINTED DIRECTORY: Beginning this year, APPIC will no longer
issue a printed copy of the Directory. This decision was made after
several years of surveying APPIC members and internship applicants,
with many students telling us that they relied primarily on the
online version of the Directory to obtain the most up-to-date
information. An archival copy of the Directory will be available for
download (as a ".pdf" file) from the APPIC web site later this summer.

APPIC DIRECTORY ONLINE FEE: ALL students who participate in the
APPIC Match will be required to pay a fee for the DoL. This fee will
be $20 for students from doctoral programs that are APPIC Subscribers
or members of CCPPP (Canadian Council of Professional Psychology
Programs) and $50 for students from non-APPIC Subscriber programs.
This fee will be collected at the time of Match registration in the
Fall; however, students do not need to wait to use the DoL as it is
available for searching now. No access codes or passwords are
required to search the DoL.

Based on the numbers from last year's Match, approximately 95% of
registered internship applicants were from doctoral programs that
were APPIC subscribers or CCPPP members. Thus, the vast majority of
applicants will qualify for the reduced $20 DoL fee.

There is no charge for postdoctoral applicants to use the APPIC
Directory Online.

APPIC Match News Email List

THE MATCH-NEWS E-MAIL LIST

MATCH-NEWS is a FREE e-mail list provided by APPIC as a service to
Match participants. It is VERY STRONGLY recommended that all
internship applicants subscribe to this list as early as possible in the process
(i.e., subscribe NOW if you plan to apply for internship in the Fall
of 2008). MATCH-NEWS is an "announce-only" list, which means that
only APPIC can post messages to the list. The volume of e-mail
messages will generally be very small, usually ranging from zero to
five messages per month. As the Match approaches, the MATCH-NEWS list
will be the primary method of communicating important late-breaking
news and information about the Match, as well as tips and suggestions
about how to make the most of the process. Many applicants from
previous years have told us that the messages posted to MATCH-NEWS
were extremely helpful to them in navigating the selection process.

NOTE: If you previously signed up for the MATCH-NEWS list, there is
no need to do so again.

To subscribe to the MATCH-NEWS list, send a blank e-mail message to
the following address:

    subscribe-match-news@lyris.appic.org

You will subsequently receive an e-mail message (with the subject
line, "Your confirmation needed") that contains instructions for you
to follow in order to confirm your subscription. Simply follow the
instructions in that message, and you will soon receive a Welcome e-
mail in response. This Welcome e-mail confirms that you are
successfully subscribed to the list (please note that you are NOT
subscribed to the list until you have received the Welcome message).

PLEASE NOTE: If your e-mail program uses "Spam" or "Junk Mail"
filtering, it is possible that the confirmation message from the APPIC
server will be automatically redirected to your "Junk Mail" folder
without your knowledge. If you do not receive a confirmation message
in your "In" box, you should check your "Spam" or "Junk Mail" folder
to see if the message is there.

See the contact info below if you have difficulty subscribing.

-----

THE INTERN-NETWORK E-MAIL LIST

APPIC also maintains a separate e-mail list, called INTERN-NETWORK,
which is a discussion list for internship applicants. This list is
optional for applicants, though many find it useful. Applicants can
use this list to discuss various aspects of the selection process or
to ask questions about the AAPI, interviews, Match, etc. Since this
list can generate considerable discussion at times, and thus
considerable e-mail, subscribers may wish to use the list's "Digest"
mode in order to keep e-mail to a minimum (see www.appic.org, click on
"E-mail Lists," then on "Intern-Network" for more info about Digest
mode). To subscribe to the INTERN-NETWORK list, send a blank e-mail
message to:

    subscribe-intern-network@lyris.appic.org

and follow the confirmation instructions as described above for the
MATCH-NEWS list.

-----

MORE INFORMATION

For general information about the APPIC Match, see:

    http://www.appic.org/

and click on "About the Match" and "Frequently Asked Questions."
General information is also available at the matching program web site:

    http://www.natmatch.com/psychint

by clicking the links in the "Overview" and "Match Process" sections.

For complete information about all of APPIC's e-mail lists, see www.appic.org
  and click on "E-mail Lists."

If you have any questions about these lists or about the APPIC Match
in general, you may contact Dr. Greg Keilin at gkeilin@mail.utexas.edu
or (512) 475-6949.

CalFam Practicum Opportunities

ADULT/ADOLESCENT PSYCHOTHERAPY PRACTICUM PROGRAM

A practicum placement at California Family Counseling Center (CalFam) is intended for those Psy.D. and Ph.D. students who have completed psychopathology couses and who are interested in an applied clinical setting. Cllients seen at the Counseling Center will include adults and couples presenting with a wide variety of Axis I and Axis II diagnoses. In addition to seeing clients at CalFam, students will be required to see clients at other training locations. Students will carry a caseload of 4-5 clients per week, as well as complete clinical intake assessments. Students will also be required to complete 2 community outreach events during the training year.
To support and enhance training experiences, students will participate in training and didactic seminars that will focus on a variety of topics related to clinical work. They will also participate in one hour of individual supervision and 2 hours of group supervision.
The practicum program begins on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 and concludes on Friday, July 10, 2009.
Attn: So. Cal. APPIC Applicants

I'm sure all of you have seen news of the terrible fires in Southern
California. As a consequence of the danger and the evacuations, APPIC
has learned that some Universities and internship sites have closed
in the seven counties designated as disaster areas. It goes without
saying that these events have also caused huge disruption to students
who are submitting internship applications. Many applicants and
internship programs in the disaster area are having significant
difficulties in submitting and receiving internship applications.

Please review the following information if you are a student or
program in the affected area or are applying to a program in that
area:

IF YOU ARE A STUDENT LIVING IN THE AFFECTED AREA: APPIC has
contacted all APPIC-member Training Directors to request that they
extend their application deadlines for applicants in the seven
California counties designated as disaster areas. While we cannot
guarantee that all sites will extend their deadlines, we have
strongly encouraged them to do so. It was almost two years ago to
this very day that we had to make a similar request in the aftermath
of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Our APPIC member programs
responded with great support and I expect they'll do the same now.

In addition, we recommend that you (and, if necessary, your academic
Director of Training) contact sites directly to request an extension
if you are unable to meet their deadlines. If you think it would be
helpful, APPIC has drafted a message that requests sites to extend
their deadlines -- for a copy of this message, please contact me at
Stephen.McCutcheon@va.gov . You may also contact me at this address
if you would like to speak to an APPIC Board consultant about your
specific situation.

IF YOU ARE AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM IN THE AFFECTED AREA: Please
contact the APPIC Match Coordinator, Dr. Greg Keilin
(gkeilin@mail.utexas.edu or 512-475-6949) if you would like APPIC to
make an announcement about the status of your program and/or your
program's application process.

IF YOU ARE APPLYING TO AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM IN THE AFFECTED AREA:
Please understand that some sites are experiencing significant
disruption at the present time, and may not yet be able to receive or
acknowledge receipt of your application. Selection timelines and
mail service may be disrupted, and it may be a while before you can
reach some programs to verify the receipt of your application. So,
some patience and anxiety management strategies will undoubtedly be
necessary over the next few weeks. Be sure to review the "Program
Updates" e-mails that are distributed regularly via MATCH-NEWS for
possible updates about the status of these programs or possible
changes to application deadlines.

All best wishes,
Steve

Steve McCutcheon, PhD
Chair, APPIC Board of Directors
Director, Psychology Training

The transpersonal approach emphasizes integration and awareness of body, mind, and spirit as a way of maximizing human potential, creativity, and fulfillment. We serve a typical outpatient population, and offer a sliding scale. Interns are offered an opportunity to utilize several contemporary therapeutic modalities (especially contemporary psychoanalytic approaches) within a transpersonal framework that includes attention to multiple layers of consciousness, spirituality, mind-body wellness and the relationship of the individual to the community. Weekly training includes didactic presentations, case conferences and individual supervision. Experts from the Bay Area community provide trainings on special topics throughout the year. For further information about the TCC, visit our website: [ http://www.itp.edu/resources/counselServices.cfm ]http://www.itp.edu/resources/counselServices.cfm

Alvarado Parkway Institute
APPIC Clearinghouse

APPIC CLEARINGHOUSE

John Umstead Hospital
Butner, NC
Site #: 1408
APA Accreditation: No
APPIC Member: Yes
John Umstead Hospital, a state psychiatric facility in the north central
region of North Carolina, has 2 openings in its predoctoral Internship
program for 2006-2007 and is offering a diverse internship opportunity
that may be of interest to graduate students who are still seeking
psychology internship placements. We have one position in our
geropsychiatry track and one position in our child track.

A full description of the structure of the program can be found on our
web site (www.unc.edu/~abarrick) <http://www.unc.edu/%7Eabarrick%29>,
where the brochure details the rich variety of training our site
provides. Our program emphasizes the value of training and service in
public-sector mental health across age and ethnic groups. We are able
to be more flexible in arranging training opportunities for next year
but do require that interested applicants have some relevant experience
with psychodiagnostic assessment and inpatient psychiatric treatment
with people who have severe mental illness. Only those with this
experience base are asked to apply.

We will be considering applicants immediately and would like to make a
decision as soon as possible. If you are interested, we suggest that you
review the web site in detail first and discuss your experience with an
advisor to assess the goodness of fit for this program, particularly due
to our current funding situation, as due to ongoing budgetary crises in
the State of North Carolina, we do not have funding for the Internship
for the next academic year.

Please send a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a full APPIC
application, a work sample, and your letters of recommendation (if
available) to Scott.Schwartz@ncmail.net
<mailto:Scott.Schwartz@ncmail.net>. In your cover letter, be sure to
state your interest in our training program and the best way(s) to
contact you. We will then contact you to discuss your training
background and goals before asking you to send any additional
application materials.
