APPIC Match News

APPIC MATCH NEWS --- PROGRAM UPDATES THROUGH 11/18/07:

Below is the latest list of "late-breaking" news items from APPIC-member internship programs. These announcements will be distributed to MATCH-NEWS at regular intervals during the internship application process in order to provide applicants with important updates about programs to which they may be applying. Training Directors who wish to submit news items for future announcements should refer to the information at the end of this message.

Applicants should remember that programs can update their APPIC Directory information at any time. The "Last Modified" field in the Directory will let you know if a program's information has been recently updated.

APPIC Member #: 1251 Site Name: Youth Consultation Service, YCS Institute for Infant and Preschool Mental Health Location: East Orange, NJ Training Director: Jennis E. Hanna, PhD

Due to financial circumstances beyond our control, the YCS Institute will not be able to offer internships for the upcoming year ('08 - '09). Therefore, we will withdraw from the match, maintain our APPIC membership, and hope that circumstances change so we can participate the following year.

APPIC Member #: 1181 Site Name: The Village Location: Hartford, CT Training Director: Kathleen E. Garnet, Ph.D. - kgarnet@villageforchildren.org, 860-297-0551

The Village has experienced an unexpected psychology staffing shortage. We are actively in the process of recruiting a licensed psychologist for this opening. However, we have made the difficult decision to suspend recruitment at this time. We do not want to put applicants in the position of traveling to our site to interview without being able to guarantee that we will remain on active status for the 2008 - 2009 year. We plan to recruit through the Clearinghouse to fill the four slots for next year, assuming that our staffing situation improves, as we are confident it will.

APPIC Member #: 1173 Site Name: Denver Health Medical Center Location: Denver, CO Training Director: Christopher Sheldon, Ph.D. (christopher.sheldon@dhha.org)

The DHMC Predoctoral Internship is pleased to announce funding for two additional internship positions. A new major rotation in Health and Primary Care Psychology will focus on integrated clinical care and on development and implementation of disease management models. Separate APPIC Match numbers will be used to help applicants select a desired combination of major rotations. With this significant change, new applications will be accepted until 11/28/07.

APPIC Member #: 1130 Site Name: Augustus Hawkins Mental Health Center Location: Los Angeles, CA Training Director: LaTonya Wood, PhD - lwood@lacdmh.org; 310-668-4358

The training program at Augustus F. Hawkins is pleased to announce that it has added a Jail Mental Health Specialty to its rotations. Interns will be assigned to either the Century Regional Detention Facility for women or the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, California. Interns assigned to this rotation will have opportunities to work with the Forensic Inpatient Program, a psychiatric hospital in the jail that provides generally short-term treatment for male and female inmates experiencing acute episodes of mental illness; and the "Outpatient" Programs, which provide mental health services for inmates who do not require inpatient hospitalization. Direct services include intake evaluations, diagnosis, crisis intervention, individual therapy, and group therapy. Psychological testing may be available when appropriate and feasible. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in the Community Reintegration Project which is a coordinated effort across disciplines to mobilize psychosocial, mental health and rehabilitation needs of released inmates to reduce recidivism. The rotation assignment will also include didactics specific to forensic assessment and jail mental health.

To allow time for interested persons to submit applications, the application deadline has been extended to December 15, 2007. It is requested that ALL application materials be submitted electronically to lwood@lacdmh.org

APPIC Member #: 1493 Site Name: MercyFirst Location: Syosset, NY Training Director: Stephen Migden, Ph.D., ABPP

APPIC Member #: 1158 Site Name: Arizona Psychology Training Consortium Location: State of Arizona Training Director: Michael Redivo, Ph.D. mredivo@aol.com

The Arizona Community Clinical Psychology Training Group (ACCPT-G) will be unable to offer an internship in 2008-2009 due to funding problems. Phoenix Children's Hospital internship program in pediatric psychology was listed as an independent program earlier this year, but they have joined the Consortium to offer an APPIC-member training program for 2008-2009. Washington Elementary School District, Paradise Valley Unified School District, and the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center are offering school psychology internships. Other new internship sites are Ellen Diamond in geriatric psychology, Paulette Selmi in forensic psychology, and Gatehouse Academy in substance abuse assessment and treatment. Information about these training sites is available on the Arizona Psychological Association website at www.azpa.org .
