Great libraries make life easier
The Pacifica library is a special collections library: we focus
our acquisition policies on core, rare, and hard-to-find items in the
fields of depth psychology,
clinical psychology and mythological studies. In addition to what
we offer, some of our
students find local libraries instrumental, if not just fun to
browse, and discover the value of online collections. Digital
archiving and digital preservation are the new buzzwords, so browse
what's available...for projects or for play!
Here is just a sampling of libraries with great in-house and online holdings:
Oxford University Libraries
Oxford Eprints
A freely accessible, online collection of articles written by Oxford University authors and organized by subject/year.
Digital Shikshapatri
"...instant online access to a treasure
of the British Hindu cultural heritage that is held in
Oxford's Bodleian Library. This fragile Sanskrit manuscript,
called the Shikshapatri, was written by Shree Swaminarayan,
founder of Swaminarayan Hinduism, and outlines moral and
spiritual codes for everyday life." View the manuscript and see/hear a reading.
Early Manuscripts at Oxford
Online access to over 80 Celtic and Medieval illuminated manuscripts digitized directly from the originals.
Bodleian Library Medieval Manuscripts
Covers the 11th-19th centuries.
General List of Digital Initiatives at Oxford
There are over 30! Many of them fully searchable.
Cornell University
Witchcraft Collection
"...over 3,000 titles documenting
the history of the Inquisition and the persecution of witchcraft."
D-Space

Digital Collections List
Includes Icelandic Sagas, Race, Ethnicity & Religion and more.
New York Public Library
NYPL boasts a few special libraries as well as several fascinating digital collections, including the Scientific and Medical Illustrations exhibit (spanning 700 years), and Utopia:
Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World. NYPL also
offers computer and research classes, and hosts a variety of lectures
and events.
Library Systems of Illinois
Illinois has one of the best public library systems in existence. Chicago Public Library houses its own digital collections
of historic photographs and the development of cultures in the Chicago
area, and many of Illinois's libraries have their own online archives.
UC Los Angeles
UC Riverside
Black Drama
"...a unique database which brings together 1,200 plays, almost a quarter
of which are previously unpublished, by writers such as Langston
Hughes, Ed Bullins, Willis Richardson, Femi Euba, Amiri Baraka,
Randolph Edmonds, Zora Neale Hurston, and many others...The
collection includes the complete works of more than 300 playwrights
from North America, English-speaking Africa, the Caribbean, Europe,
Australia, and other locations. Starting ca. 1850 with Victorian plays
and working up to the present, this collection presents the writings
together with biographies, playbills, images, production notes,
performance information, and much more."
UC Santa Barbara
...has access to a great many databases that contain full-text
articles. These databases are accessible only through on-campus
use. UCSB has just established the Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project,
from which you can listen to and download MP3 files of historical
recordings (not terribly related to our academic field, but fun and
interesting).
Library of Congress Online Exhibitions
Mountain West Digital Library
University of California libraries have a collective, online catalog,
called Melvyl. And, of course there are the old online favorites Perseus Digital Library, Project Gutenberg, The Labyrinth, and the Internet Classics Archive.
Part of a Librarian's job is to teach you how to learn about
resources on your own, beyond what is required for a paper or other academic purposes.
So scuff around on the webpages of your favorite public and academic
libraries to see what online collections they offer: you might
just find yourself at Stanford's Dime Novels and Penny Dreadfuls. Get interested in libraries...they have so much to offer!
