Charlyne Gelt: Clinical Psychology (2001)

Charlyne Gelt (2001), Ph.D., MFT, CGP, is a licensed psychotherapist and registered group psychotherapist who integrates 15 years of working with “strong” women struggling with issues of submissive dependency and emotional intimacy in relationships.

In Dr. Gelt’s Women’s Empowerment Groups, she helps women in their struggle to define themselves as individuals (often while in committed love relationships) by teasing out issues that block them from actualizing their full potential. She helps individuals and couples learn the tools to move beyond self-destructive patterns to a position of empowerment: 1+1=3.

In addition, Dr. Gelt works with individuals and couples, as well as families who have someone in prison. She is in private practice in Encino, and served as adjunct faculty at Phillips Graduate Institute. Her articles have appeared in Los Angeles Psychologist (Hell’s Angels 3/06), The California Therapist and other professional publications, and she has recently completed her book Hell’s Angels: The Transformative Journeys of Women Who Love Lifers and Death Row Inmates. “As a psychotherapist, the most unique population of women I have worked with are those who have by hook or by crook become emotionally involved with, and even married -- men who are in prison—lifers or death row inmates—after the man’s incarceration. I call these women “Hell’s Angels.” Dr. Gelt will be presenting Hell’s Angels at the Creativity and Madness Conference in Santa Fe (July 2007).

“I hold a deep concern for all children, particularly those who slip through the cracks in our educational system. My recent article, Father Hunger (California Therapist), addresses this issue (www.drgelt.com).” Dr. Gelt uses over twenty years experience as an educator, including Special Education, to work with children and families with Asperger/autistic spectrum disorders and adolescents with severe emotional disturbances. She offers presentations on Autistic Spectrum Disorder, as well as Parenting Styles to help families learn the tools to move beyond destructive patterns. She understands the impact of the special needs child on marital, and family systems. To help families reach their child’s goals, move towards healthier communication, and balance the family system, she draws from multiple theoretical frames, including cognitive-behavioral, self-psychology, and family systems lens.

Dr. Gelt is a member of: American Psychological Association; Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA); California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT); San Fernando Valley Association of Marriage and Family Therapists; American Association of Group Psychotherapists; Southern California Group Psychotherapy Association; Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis (SCSCH).
